The Difference is Night and Day

The Light Source Mini is the follow up to our 4×5 Light Source Basic and is launching as we celebrate our three year anniversary of launching film scanning light sources. A ground-up redesign with more light output and dedicated to users who are scanning 35mm and 120 film, this light is designed to stand along our existing “pro” and “basic” light sources. Despite it’s size, it is 4 stops brighter than our 4×5 Light Source Basic and equal in brightness to our 5×7 Light Source Pro!

WHY SCAN WITH CAMERA?

Not Just Because Flatbeds Take Forever.

DSLR/Mirrorless scanning is relatively new to film, but it gives added speed, convenience, and precision for capturing frames in full detail. Modern cameras with high resolution also capture slide film with better reproduction quality and color due to CMOS sensor technology.

Digital camera scanning is popular because it’s an easy and resourceful way to scan your own work with equipment you may already have.

All you need is a digital camera, a computer, a way to hold negatives flat, and a small light table or similar light source.  If you’re a digital photographer interested in shooting film, a hybrid photographer looking for a resourceful way to scan your own film, or a photographer exclusively shooting film with the desire to quickly and easily scan at home or the office, using a digital camera is a great option.  You can make use of the digital camera you already own or easily source one used or new.  (P.S.- you don’t need the newest and greatest to get great scans)

WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR CAMERA SCANNING?

Negative Holder

Keeps the film in place for image capture. The film needs to be completely flat for sharp photos.

Light Source

Illuminate the negative from below. Consistent light allows for even capture without vignetting.

Camera Stand

Hold the camera over the light source. Avoiding shake will reduce blur and sharpen images.

Digital Camera

Most digital cameras work well. Tethered capture to a computer makes workflow much faster.

WHAT WE SOLVED?

The biggest pain point with camera scanning is holding the negative flat. Unfortunately, existing solutions rely on strip holders that are incredibly slow to set up and use.

While varying concepts for digital camera film scanning exist today, MK1 is unique in that it scans full length, uncut rolls of 35mm film.  Providing a much faster means of operation, having the ability to scan an uncut roll can allow an operator to scan an entire 36 exposure roll in 5 minutes or less.  Alternatively, you can scan strips of 35mm film.  Film Carrier MK1 can scan 35mm full and half frame film in strips or full rolls.

Features

Extremely Flat

Using a unique channel technology, each frame is forced flat using the guide path. This ensures there is near zero distortion for sharp images across the frame, perfect for using lenses that are sharpest at larger apertures or MF camera sensors.

Greater Control

Because of advancements in CMOS sensor technology, camera scanning now gives greater editing control for positive films like Kodak Ektachrome. Additionally, multiple exposures can be stacked if needed for greater dynamic range.

Faster Workflows

Unlike traditional flatbed scanning or scanning with strip holders, the MK1 quickly scans entire rolls without spending time having to carefully align delicate negatives.

Safer For The Emulsion

Because of the unique channel design, no part of the film emulsion comes into contact with MK1. Unlike other roller mechanisms that touch your image area, this only touches the outermost edges along the sprocket holes.
